We were under extreme duress during our peaceful protests—attacked by angry mobs and even charged with “obstructing traffic.” Ridiculous charges to be sure. But we became unsure what more would unfold. I kept most of these things from Henry. Why worry him? He came to the picketing the first few days we were in Washington, D.C., but the sight of those opposing us, spewing their hatred, jeering at us, bothered him so. I encouraged him to spend his time otherwise. After some convincing, he conceded that it might be best.

He wasn’t there when our group was physically assaulted. I hated hiding the bruises from him that evening. And I did everything I could to keep news of the trumped up charges from reaching him. Again, why worry him? It will all come to naught. But things continue to escalate…
